As I understand it, you are pretty much correct about the need for precise placement. For any given observation the correlator needs to know exactly where each dish is. Part of the calibration procedure takes care of this. I think (but am not sure) that they look at a known signal, use that for calibration, and then look at the target. The precision necessary is going to be a function of the wavelength being observed (mm and sub-mm in this case). But I don't know exactly what that function is.?

I don't know why people are bashing the father so much. The kid will learn English just fine when he grows up, unless if he has a learning disability. Take, for example, the many foreign kids who were brought to the US as a kid (me included). It would've have been more useful if the kid were taught another more popular language, but there is value in teaching the kid a different language, be it Klingon, Sindarin, etc. It actually allows them to acquire other languages easier, and teaches them that grammar structure can be something other than English.
