The fact that one corporation can exert enough pressure on our government to force the copyright laws to be changed is the crux of the problem.Steamboat Willie should have been in the public domain in 1956, but the copyright laws got changed so it wouldn't enter the public domain until 1986, but before 1986 could come, the laws were changed again so that it wouldn't enter the public domain until 2003, but lo and behold, five years before that Disney decided it was time for congress to change the law again. Now it is set to enter the public domain in 2023, what kind of odds would you have to be given before you'd be willing to bet on that?Disney and the rest of big content write our nations copyright laws. You can argue against what you perceive as the flaws in the copyright system, but they are all ancillary to the fact of who gets to write the laws, and who elects them; corporate shareholders or the American electorate.

Having grown up on welfare and foodstamps, I know that it's a result of bad decisions, typically. People tend to get away with minimal effort in whatever way they can if they are allowed to. There is no shortage of charity (mandatory state imposed or voluntary private sources) for providing food in this country. |
