Members of other religions had plenty of reason to hate Joseph Smith. He testified that he'd seen and spoken to God who called him as a prophet to proclaim all other churches as being false. He proclaimed that clergy should be unpaid and that no seminary could give men the power to act in God's name thus infuriating every minister in any community he moved to. The locals who killed him didn't need fake excuses like the one you propose in order to want him dead. There's also no historical record of any kind to indicate that Brigham Young was even aware of the massacre before it had already occurred while he was many miles away in Salt Lake City when it occurred.
