The scale problem that Twitter has is immense. It doesn't matter that the data is very simple, when you have that much data flowing in at once, trying to store and retrieve it at a reasonable rate and synchronizing across multiple servers becomes a tremendously difficult task. Particularly when you have to shore up the system's software and hardware without simply cutting off access and pulling the plug for a few hours at a time.And thus was born the failwhale.!
