I've worked in a clinical setting for about 5 years, but only at academic centers. Academic centers generally don't care about insurance status. The only time insurance status is an issue is when I need to discharge someone from the hospital, and the social workers are unable to send them to rehabilitation or obtain a home nurse to ease the transition for a few weeks. Generally speaking, when I see a consultation in the ER, or prepare them for the OR, I don't even know what their insurance status is.I realize this is probably different than a private hospital. I have been on the receiving end of hospital transfer requests from private community hospitals for patients who are uninsured, so I don't doubt that some of this suboptimal treatment goes on.Just wanted to say that not all hospitals are coldly calculating and cruel towards the uninsured as mentioned by janibrat.

Lets stop and remember something. On 9/11, these guys tried to destroy the values we hold dear as a nation. The simple fact is, that for all the horror, death and destruction on 9/11, it was a pinprick to the vastness of the United States in terms of real damange. The real effect of the attack is not the destruction caused, but how we, as a society, react to it. President Bush seemed to realise this immediately afterward - when he went before the joint session of Congress on 9/12 and made it clear the terrorists were out to destroy our values and our freedoms. But then he lost his way, because the next significant steps he took afterwards was to start warrantless wiretapping, set the stage for suspending habeus corpus, and discard a whole host of other constitutionally protected rights. He helped the terrorists succeed in their aims.On the other hand, when we take these people - some of the most evil people to ever walk the planet - and give them a real trial in a forum where the forum itself (military court) doesn't make guilt or innocence a nearly forgone conclusion, then we send the most effective message possible to ourselves and to the rest of the world that if we can take the worst of the worst and treat them this way, in accordance with our laws, our constitution, and our values, then those values have never been stronger and the terrorists, ultimately, failed on 9/11, That is why we should be doing exactly what Obama proposes.!

I've always thought that the "American accent" was simply a lack of "British accent". I base this on how British actors can completely, convincingly convey American speech, whereas when an American actor portrays a British character it's never quite perfect. Ask yourself how many times you've been surprised to learn that an actor was actually British (or in this case, Australian) after hearing them speak as an American. Probably more times than the reverse, I'd bet.
